Frankfort pet owners can breathe a little easier - and in case of fire, so can their favorite, furry friends.
With a donation from Invisible Fence of Chicagoland, the Frankfort Fire District is equipped with pet oxygen masks that could save pets' lives.
The unsolicited donations were dropped off at the fire district into the hands of Jeff Wander, Emergency Medical Services Coordinator.
Wander and staff planned special equipment training sessions and demonstrations within the department Wednesday, Jan. 14, to ensure that everyone knows how to utilize the new masks.
Invisible Fence donated a total of four kits to equip each station; each kit contains three pet oxygen masks in small, medium and large sizes.
"We hope that by donating oxygen mask kits that we will contribute to saving more pets and hopefully protect pet owners that may risk their own life to save a pet in a fire," said Jack Miltz, owner, Invisible Fence of Chicagoland. Wander was pleasantly surprised by the donation.
"These kits will help us save more pets. These masks will help us deliver oxygen quickly and efficiently to animals in need," Wander said.
Statistics show that in 2006 more than 40,000 pets died in fires, with the most likely cause of death smoke inhalation. In most states, emergency responders are unequipped to deal with the crisis. The donation of these specially designed and potentially lifesaving animal oxygen mask sets will enable Frankfort's rescue squads to efficiently administer oxygen to a stricken animal.
